2019 Club 10 Time Trials

April is just around the corner and so is the start of our Club 10s, Thursday 4th April to be precise. The signon car park is as last year, as is the P311 course. George says he can do the signon and starts and Julian will be timekeeping. CCT levies for club events have increased to £3 this year so club members pay £3 and visitors £5. I suggest you signon by 6.15 for the first event as it’s first come, first served to fill the maximum field of 30 due to the lack of daylight. The April starts are from 6.45, then May onwards the starts are from 7.15.

Bournemouth Arrow CC Reliability Trial – Sunday 25th November

The weather was damp but dry when 55 riders left in small groups from Bisterne Village Hall at 9am. They followed a clockwise route round the New Forest via Fordingbridge, Downton, Lover, Fritham, Brockenhurst, Burley, Thorney Hill and Ripley, 50 miles in total. Half way round the sun came out and it got even better on the “runway” towards Stoney Cross as groups hit 30mph due to the easterlytailwind. First home amongst the 7 who opted for the 33 mile route were Michelle and Richard Walter. Those doing the 50 mile route were led in by the New Forest crew of Lyndon Thompson et al. Back at HQ there was a generous spread of cakes plus a free drink.
Thanks to Steve Moss for starting the riders safely and Peter Perrin and family plus Jennie Stain for managing the catering.
The Reliability season continues on 9th December with the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 100K.

Cyclo-cross at Crow 20th January

In partnership with the New Forest CC, Poole Wheelers, and the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers, we are co-promoting Round 12 of the Wessex Cyclo-Cross League at Crow on 20th January 2019.

We are expecting over 300 competitors, racing in 10 different races catering for all age categories, from under 10s to over 50s.

An event of this scale takes some organising and we are indebted to Catherine Pascoe from the New Forest CC for leading the promotion, co-ordinating not just the input from the 4 host clubs but also from the land owner, the local Air Cadets Squadron, and catering provider. Peter Fairbank has been representing the Arrow in these discussions.

We have been asked to provide 10 helpers on the day. The racing starts at 9:30 and will finish at 15:45 but lots of our help will be needed before and after. So if you can help, even if it is for only part of the day, then please let Peter Fairbank know.

All the details are on the British Cycling website here—Wessex-League-Round-12

Any profits made are being donated to the local Air Ambulance and to the local Air Cadets Squadron.

2018 Winter programme

Coach Updates
With the Winter months coming up, the Club is looking, in line with previous years, to offer a full programme of activity to help keep those legs fine-tuned! To give the coaches an idea of numbers for the activities below, could you please drop a brief note to me at ‘’ to indicate if you intend to take part in these sessions.

The Club has secured 6 dates for the forthcoming season. This is the indoor Track at the Calshot Activities Centre at Calshot Spit, and has been used for the Arrow for many years as an ideal facility for keeping those legs turning while not worrying about the weather. All the dates below are Sundays, and all bar the last one start at 9am, lasting for 2 hours:

07/10/18 – 0900-1100
11/11/18 – 0900-1100
02/12/18 – 0900-1100
06/01/19 – 0900-1100
03/02/19 – 0900-1100
03/03/19 – 1100-1300

Numbers were a bit low for these sessions last year, so we urge all members with Track experience to try and support these sessions at this great facility.

Turbo Sessions:
These will again be at the Winton College in the Sports Hall, at 6.30pm on a Tuesday night, starting on 2nd October. These sessions require members to bring their own Turbo (and bike!) to the College, then, as a group, follow a routine directed by the Coach, to perform a 40/50 minute session. These sessions can be used to improve performance for the competitive-minded, but equally can be useful for riders simply trying to hold some form, or improve their general bike-riding fitness.

Wattbike Sessions:
As with the Turbos sessions, these are also held at the Winton College, but on the first floor in the designated ‘Wattbike’ room. The Club has 8 Wattbikes and is aiming to run a minimum of 2 sessions (i.e. 16 riders) on every Friday starting from 5th October, first session at 5.30pm, and the second session from 6.30. As space is limited for these sessions, we will operate the same booking system as in previous years, coordinated by Peter Fairbank. Similar to the Turbo sessions, these are Coached acitivities, following planned routines to enhance fitness for all levels of cyclists.

The Club is looking to re-introduce a formal Sunday clubrun, starting from October 14th. The first run will start at 9am at Parley Cross lights (Tesco side) thereafter running weekly. Updates will be posted on Facebook as we may elect to change the start locations occasionally to reflect the route of the day. These will be standard clubruns – sociable, moderate pace (16/18 mph) with a ‘no-one left behind’ policy. As they develop, we may create different groups according to demand.

As with the other Winter sessions, we urge all active Club members to support these runs so we can establish them as a core club activity, benefiting Club riders and also attracting new members to the Club.

Club TT League Table 2018

Club TT League Table 2018 – Final Results

This year the scoring system was changed to have only 10 best scores counted towards the total.  This was to encourage regular participation and improvement, preventing it becoming a “turning up prize”.  As we always need volunteers to run this event, it also means that regular participants can help out without compromising their chances in this competition. We had 17 Arrow members taking part with 4 members who did 10 or more events.

Neil Dyble in his second TT season showed gradual improvements, chipping away at his time week by week, including 4 Pb’s on his way to secure the trophy.  Well done to him.

Name Counting Events (Total events) Total Score
Neil Dyble 10 (15) 48

Chris Braiden Memorial 10 on Saturday 18 August 2018

Chris Braiden Memorial 10 on Saturday 18 August 2018

This was the 4th edition of the annual team and solo time trial in memory of Bournemouth Arrow CC fast road man and tester Chris Braiden.  A superb field of 73 friendly, but focused athletes enjoyed the testing rural 10 mile course and also the benefits of the HQ, the David Lloyd Club in Ringwood and all its facilities.  The course conditions were dry with a tricky changeable breeze which some riders reporting it being on the front both on the out and return legs.

£200 was raised in memory of Chris and donated to Cancer Research UK.

Fastest team was Clint Oliver and James Veal representing Team Spy from the Isle of Wight. They enjoyed a 16 mile warm up ride from the ferry at Lymington through the Forest via Burley to Ringwood.  They won the Chris Braiden Trophy which will be held by them for a year.

Congratulations to the Ladies winner Louisa Cooper of Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers for a great ride and posting another fast time. Congratulations also to solo TT winner Paul Lockyer of New Forest Cycling Club for posting a time of 21:12 to win by 8 seconds.

Well done to all prize winners, riders and volunteers.

Finally a big thank you to the organiser, Peter Perrin.
